Festival season sneaks up on you. One week it's just another Saturday, and the next the whole county smells like grilled elote and somebody's cousin is running the face-painting table. Here's what we watch for, season by season.

Spring: community fairs and school carnivals

The first warm weekends bring school carnivals and small community fairs out of hibernation. These are low-key, high-value — bounce houses, bake sales, and the first outdoor birthday parties of the year.

Summer: the big outdoor festivals

This is when the bigger, county-wide festivals show up — live music, food trucks lined up three deep, and enough games and activity stations to keep kids busy from noon until the fireworks. Bring a blanket, bring sunscreen, bring cash for the churro stand.

Fall: harvest festivals and cultural celebrations

Pumpkin patches, harvest fairs, and Latino cultural festivals overlap in the best possible way this time of year. It's the season where you're most likely to hear three languages and four different genres of music within the same 100 feet.

A few things that make a festival day easier

  • Arrive early if there's a specific activity your kids care about — lines build fast after 11am.
  • Bring a change of clothes. Someone is getting face paint, glitter, or a snow cone on themselves.
  • Check for a designated quiet zone if you're bringing younger toddlers — most bigger festivals have one now.

Whatever the season, the constant is the same: families showing up, kids running in packs, and grown-ups catching up on folding chairs while somebody's speaker plays just a little too loud. That's the whole point — and it's the same energy our Eureka Events team tries to bottle for every birthday and community celebration we host nearby.
